Santo Domingo – Regarding the sighting of a whale on the seawall of Santo Domingo yesterday, Friday, the head of the Division of Oceanography and Marine Resources of the National Authority of Marine Affairs (Anamar), Omar Shamir Reynoso Morales, assured that this is “nothing new” and that it can happen with other marine animals.

“This year, since the beginning of the observation season, there have been several reports of humpback whales on the Caribbean Coast, from Saona Island to the proximities of Baní,” explained Reynoso to Diario Libre.

He pointed out that these sightings are nothing more than whales or groups of whales that explore adjacent waters, however, where the greatest concentration is in the Bay of Samaná, Banco de la Plata, and Banco de la Navidad.

In that sense, Reynoso Morales recommended that citizens enjoy one of the most iconic natural spectacles of the Dominican Republic, respect their space, and not harass or disturb them.

“All Dominicans must be aware of the privilege and respect these marine mammals,” he said.

He added that the Dominican Republic is privileged to have the most critical population of humpback whales in the North Atlantic.
