Border trade thrives despite crisis

Dajabón, DR.- Despite the ongoing crisis and violence in various cities of Haiti, trade activities between Haitians and Dominicans in the Dajabón border area are proceeding smoothly this Monday.

From early morning, there has been a noticeable increase in the influx of Haitian traders and vehicles heading towards the binational market.

The director of the Specialized Body for Land Border Security (CESFRONT) assured that the border is calm, thanks to the security measures implemented by the Dominican government to safeguard the territory.

On this Monday, leaders from the Caribbean Community (Caricom), including U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Mexican Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena, and representatives from the UN, France, and Canada, are convening in Jamaica to discuss progress towards a political transition in Haiti aimed at resolving the current crisis. The opening statements for this high-level meeting, scheduled at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in Kingston, are set for 1:00 PM local time (18:00 GMT), according to Caricom.

Guyana’s President, Irfaan Ali, who currently presides over Caricom, is leading the meeting. In his recent update on negotiations with Haitian parties, he mentioned “considerable progress” without definitive results.
