The United Nations emphasized that the resolution of the crisis in Haiti rests solely with the Haitian people, with their role limited to supporting their decisions.
Responding to concerns about the lack of progress due to deep divisions among Haitian parties, the spokesperson for the Secretary-General, Stéphane Dujarric, stressed that the process must be driven by Haitians themselves.
“The Haitian political class and civil society actors must seek the best solution to move forward, and there is already a plan on the table,” Dujarric emphasized, highlighting that the UN Special Representative for Haiti, María Isabel Salvador, is actively engaging with all parties to encourage actions that benefit the Haitian people.
Addressing potential UN responsibility for failing to prevent a country’s collapse, Dujarric dismissed the notion, citing UN personnel working on the ground at great personal risk to provide assistance and support to the people of Haiti.
Furthermore, Dujarric reiterated that it is the Member States that have not provided adequate funds for the humanitarian response in Haiti or for the multinational police mission. He noted that the latter has only received $10 million in funding, a fraction of what is needed, which amounts to several hundred million dollars.
He recalled that the Secretary-General played his part by expediting an agreement for the police force, which was approved by the Security Council last October but is now facing financial challenges.
The United Nations is actively working to establish an air bridge between Haiti and the Dominican Republic to ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid amidst the country’s acute crisis and escalating violence.
Regarding the UN’s presence in Haiti, the organization reiterated its commitment, emphasizing that it will not withdraw from the country. This stance aligns with the actions taken by embassies and diplomatic representations in recent days in response to the worsening violence.
