Dominican Republic deputies fleece taxpayers again, for Mothers’ sake

Santo Domingo.- Just two weeks after the scandal with taxpayers money to pay cronies for the traditional Easter dish “sweet beans,” the lower Chamber 190 deputies’ will this time receive a cool RD$176.0 million in appliances and other gifts to hand out during Mother’s Day on Sunday.

In a statement, the deputies admitted that they’ve been handing out bonuses and appliances in their respective constituencies for more than 15 years.

“The items were acquired through a call for tenders and each lawmaker will receive appliances such as stoves, washing machines, TVs, dining sets, flatware, mattresses, irons, fans and others,” the Chamber said of the items that cost RD$176.9 million.
