Washington, US.- The upcoming regular meeting of the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS), scheduled for Wednesday, April 3, will focus on extending support for Haiti’s democratic transition.
A draft resolution to be discussed during the meeting urges Member States and permanent observers to consider providing immediate and adequate support to Haiti’s security forces. The aim is to restore peace and stability by dismantling criminal gangs and delivering urgent humanitarian aid where necessary.
Furthermore, the resolution encourages the transitional presidential council, in line with the declaration of March 11, 2024, to expedite the appointment of an interim prime minister and council of ministers. Criteria for a fair and impartial provisional electoral council are also to be established to pave the way for credible legislative and presidential elections once security conditions permit.
Stakeholders are called upon to adhere to the terms of the March 11 declaration and collaborate towards achieving its goals, emphasizing the restoration of security, rule of law, and democracy for the benefit of all Haitians.
The resolution stresses the importance of supporting Haitian actors, including the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH), in facilitating a political process led by Haitians themselves, ensuring credible elections with broad participation.
The international community, including OAS Member States and permanent observers, is urged to continue supporting Haiti’s democratic transition, including through financial assistance.
Recognizing the evolving security situation, Member States and international organizations are urged to intensify efforts to promote Haiti’s institutional, social, and economic development, particularly in the long term, to foster stability and alleviate poverty.
Additionally, the Working Group for Haiti is tasked with providing regular updates to the Permanent Council on Haiti’s situation and the progress in implementing the Kingston Declaration, including the establishment of the transitional presidential council.
The meeting is scheduled for 10:00 EDT (14:00 GMT) in the Simón Bolívar room at the OAS headquarters in Washington, United States.
