Dominican Republic joins Net Zero Government Initiative

Washington D.C.- The United States Presidency has recently extended an invitation to the Dominican Republic to join the Net Zero Government Initiative (NZGI), aimed at reducing and ultimately eliminating greenhouse gas emissions.

This significant inclusion was formalized during a ceremony held at the White House, attended by Ambassador Sonia Guzmán, representing the Dominican Government, along with Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, Miguel Ceara Hatton.

The core objective of the Net Zero Government Initiative revolves around assisting governments worldwide in achieving the ambitious target of zero greenhouse gas emissions in their operations by the year 2050.

Ambassador Sonia Guzmán elucidated that greenhouse gases, encompassing carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, ozone, among others, not only occur naturally in the atmosphere but are also significantly produced through human activities, leading to detrimental effects on the environment and exacerbating global warming.

Guzmán proudly emphasized, “The Dominican Republic stands alongside the Net Zero Government Initiative,” underscoring the nation’s commitment to environmental preservation, a cornerstone of President Luis Abinader’s agenda in combating climate change.

Highlighting the collaborative efforts of the Ministry of the Environment, Guzmán underscored the development of the Transversal Sustainability Policy, urging public sector entities to align their practices with the Dominican Republic’s overarching goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

Moreover, as a crucial step forward, Guzmán noted the launch of the Green Procurement Policy in 2023, undertaken in partnership with the National Directorate of Public Contracting, further solidifying the nation’s dedication to sustainable practices and environmental stewardship.
