Santo Domingo.- President Luis Abinader convened an urgent meeting at the National Palace upon his immediate return from Washington, aiming to assess the impact of the ongoing heavy rains across the nation caused by various weather systems.
Accompanied by Vice President Raquel Peña and representatives from all rescue organizations, a comprehensive evaluation of the situation was conducted. Detailed examination of affected areas led to the formulation of an action plan to provide swift responses to the prevailing atmospheric conditions.
In response to the crisis, General (retired) Juan Manuel Méndez, the COE director, commended the government’s coordinated efforts, emphasizing prompt response. Minister of the Presidency, Igor Rodríguez, who has been actively engaged in community assistance, was also noted for his presence and contributions.
Presently, the COE has designated five provinces under red alert, with 17 provinces and the National District under yellow alert, and four provinces under green alert due to the persistent influence of a trough causing humid and unstable conditions, resulting in heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds.
Gloria Ceballos, the director of Onamet, mentioned that although May is anticipated to remain rainy, the recent trough is gradually diminishing, offering some respite from the intense rains experienced in recent weeks.
The meeting, held at the Green Hall of the National Palace, was attended by key figures including Minister of Defense Carlos Diaz Morfa, Director of Civil Defense Juan Salas, and various other ministers and directors overseeing crucial sectors such as Public Works, Public Health, Energy and Mines, among others.
Additionally, high-ranking officials from the military, police, emergency services, and public utility sectors were present, along with representatives from governmental councils and agencies focusing on social assistance, agricultural support, infrastructure development, and community empowerment.
Virtual participation was facilitated for individuals unable to attend physically, ensuring comprehensive representation from regional authorities including governors and mayors from affected provinces and municipalities.
