Santo Domingo.- The Superintendency of Electricity (SIE) and the Coordinating Body (OC), in collaboration with the Civil Defense (DC) and the Emergency Operation Committee (COE), have reached agreements on the contingency plans of distribution companies. These plans aim to anticipate and address potential impacts of atmospheric phenomena likely to occur before and during the cyclonic season, commencing on June 1st. The coordinated efforts seek to ensure uninterrupted service for the populace.

This initiative aligns with Article 106 of the Regulations for the Application of Law 125-01, mandating electric companies to submit contingency plans to the SIE and OC no later than March 30th annually. These plans are crucial for addressing eventualities arising from atmospheric phenomena during the cyclonic season, spanning from June 1st to November 30th each year.

During the meeting, participants reviewed preventive measures and necessary actions to address torrential downpours affecting urban areas and large regions of the country.

Juan Salas, Director of Civil Defense, commended the proactive stance of the companies and the regulatory bodies within the electricity sector, particularly under the leadership of Andres Astacio. Their collaboration with the National Emergency Commission, Civil Defense, and COE prior to the 2024 cyclonic season demonstrates a commitment to mitigating adverse effects and protecting citizens.

Juan Fernandez emphasized the role of the COE as the primary responder in emergencies, as stipulated in Law 147-02. The COE serves as the official spokesperson of the State, issuing alerts regarding potential emergencies or disasters.

He proposed further enhancing coordination and collaboration with the electricity sector to ensure a prompt and efficient response. Fernandez outlined COE’s forthcoming actions for the 2024 cyclonic season and emergency management in anticipation of potential eventualities.

Representatives from the Ministry of Energy and Mines, 90% of generating companies, the Dominican Transmission Company (ETED), the CCE Energy Control Center, 11 distribution companies, as well as directors of SIE and OC, were present at the meeting, collectively working towards ensuring preparedness and effective response mechanisms.
