Santo Domingo.- The United States Embassy in Santo Domingo announced today the arrival of the US Coast Guard training ship Eagle, also known as “America’s Tall Ship,” to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
The Eagle is scheduled to dock on May 25 and will remain until May 28 as part of its academic and cultural mission. During its stay, the public will have the opportunity to visit the ship, according to a press release.
While in the Dominican Republic, the Eagle will be moored at the Dominican Navy Naval Station in San Souci, where the crew will offer free tours to the public during the following schedule:
Following its visit to the Dominican Republic, the Eagle training ship will travel to Cartagena, Colombia; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Bridgetown, Barbados; Hamilton, Bermuda; and Halifax, Nova Scotia, as part of its three-month tour until the end of July. During this tour, the crew will engage in academic exchanges and offer free tours to the public.
Captain Jessica Rozzi-Ochs, the commanding officer of the Eagle, stated, “The Eagle has a long history of sailing the Caribbean. The cadets are truly eager to share this 88-year-old maritime treasure with the people of the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. During their visit, cadets will offer free public tours of the Eagle and will also participate in community projects and enjoy the wonderful local culture.”
Originally commissioned as the Horst Wessel in 1936 to serve as a training ship for Germany’s naval officers before World War II, the Eagle was acquired by the United States as war reparation after the end of the war.
