New Haitian Prime Minister Garry Conille forms cabinet

Haiti.- The new Prime Minister of Haiti, Garry Conille, has formed his cabinet, with Dominique Dupuy standing out as the Minister of Foreign Affairs, as reported by local media.

Dupuy, previously Haiti’s representative to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), resigned from his position on the Haitian Presidential Transition Council in March. He cited receiving death threats and facing social media harassment from Haitian groups as reasons for his resignation.

Other notable appointments in Conille’s cabinet include Conille himself as Minister of the Interior, Moise Jean-Pierre as Minister of the Environment, Brignol Georges Fil as Minister of Public Health, and Jean Marc Berthier Antoine as Minister of Defense.

Marie Françoise Suzan has been appointed to oversee the Status of Women portfolio, while Carlos Hercule will be responsible for the Justice portfolio.

The formation of the cabinet marks a crucial step for Conille as he assumes his role as prime minister of Haiti, appointed by the Transitional Presidential Council.

In response to recent violence, including the murder of three members of the Temporary Anti-Gang Unit (UTAG) of the National Police in Port-au-Prince, Conille has vowed to combat violence and impunity relentlessly. He condemned the criminal acts and emphasized the need for swift arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators. The murders were claimed by former police officer Jimmy Cherizier, also known as ‘Barbecue’, who controls the Delmas 18 area.

Haiti awaits the deployment of a multinational force approved by the United Nations Security Council, led by Kenya, to combat and reduce armed gangs in Port-au-Prince and other parts of the country.
