Dominican Republic tops Caribbean in Global Responsible AI Index

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic has emerged as a leader among Caribbean nations in the Global Index on Responsible AI (GIRAI), underscoring its dedication to ethical and responsible artificial intelligence development, notably through initiatives like ENIA. Developed by the Global Center on AI Governance in South Africa, GIRAI serves as the premier global benchmark for evaluating AI practices across 138 countries, assessing how nations tackle ethical, social, and regulatory challenges posed by AI technologies.

With a score of 23.18, the Dominican Republic ranks 50th globally in the GIRAI report, highlighting its commitment to transparency and data availability in AI governance. Within Latin America, the country secures the 6th position, surpassing Argentina and trailing behind Colombia. This positioning reflects significant strides in implementing responsible AI practices, reaffirming its leadership role in the region.

Bartolomé Pujals, Director of OGTIC and Executive Director of the Cabinet for Innovation and Digital Development, emphasized that GIRAI evaluates nations based on their AI policies, practices, and advancements. He noted the Dominican Republic’s progress in crucial areas such as regulation, innovation, and practical applications of AI for societal benefit.

Pujals expressed that these results motivate ongoing enhancements in responsible AI policies and practices, aiming for higher rankings and increased positive impacts on society. The country’s strong standing in the index underscores collaborative efforts among government, private sector, and academic institutions to create an environment conducive to developing AI solutions that address social, economic, and environmental challenges.

Data for GIRAI was collected through a rigorous expert survey from November 2021 to November 2023, involving 138 researchers who answered 1,862 questions across various AI-related topics. A global team of assessors ensured the accuracy and reliability of the data, reaffirming the credibility of the Dominican Republic’s achievements in responsible AI implementation.
