Enhancing meteorological observation in the Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo.- The executive director of the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INDRHI), Olmedo Caba Romano, welcomed a delegation from the National Meteorological Office (ONAMET), the State Meteorological Agency of Spain (AEMET), and the World Food Programme (WFP). This meeting was part of an ONAMET-led project aimed at enhancing the country’s meteorological observation network.

The purpose of the meeting was to brief INDRHI on the installation process of four new meteorological stations, with the water authority supporting analysis, diagnosis, and development. These stations will provide crucial data for institutional functions. Representing ONAMET was Deputy Director Andrés Campusano, while AEMET was represented by special advisor Fernando Belda and territorial delegate Jorge Tamayo Carmona. Graciela Pérez represented the WFP.

Held in INDRHI’s executive meeting room, the discussion focused on the advanced climatological stations to be installed in Puerto Plata, Barahona, Punta Cana, and at ONAMET headquarters. These stations aim to improve weather forecasts and protect lives and property from natural phenomena. Caba Romano emphasized their importance in strengthening the country’s early warning system, enhancing planning and response to adverse weather events. Campusano highlighted AEMET’s coordination of the Systematic Observations Financing Service (SOFF) under the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) mandate, noting INDRHI’s cooperation in improving meteorological infrastructure.
