Santo Domingo.- The Trust for the Development of the Mass Transportation System of the Dominican Republic (FITRAM) has announced the tender for the construction of tunnels and other components for the Metropolitan Train of Santo Domingo.
Scheduled to transport between 20,000 and 30,000 passengers per hour from the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center to Las Americas International Airport (AILA), the Metropolitan Train will operate on an automatic system. It forms a crucial part of the Integrated Transport System, featuring 20 stations designed to reduce travel time between these points to just 20 minutes, significantly cutting down on the current two-hour journey duration.
According to FITRAM’s website, the project spans 32 kilometers, with 22 kilometers at ground level. The route will notably pass along the cliff of Ecological Avenue.
The first phase, connecting Santo Domingo to AILA, is slated to commence this year, with subsequent phases extending from Avenida 27 de Febrero to Pintura and the Prolongación 27 de Febrero in Santo Domingo Oeste.
