Protests continue in towns across the north region

Santiago.- Villa González township woke up to a 24 hour shutdown Wednesday, while a second day clashes continue in Licey and parts of Moca, where tear gas canisters lobbed by police affected several people.

There has been no meeting thus far between officials and protesters who called to strike indefinitely.

Community leaders demand pavement on 27 kilometers of streets and a sewage system.

A 24-hour shutdown was called in Villa González until Thursday, as the community rejects the installation of a plant to treat hospital waste.

Businesses shuttered their doors in support of the strike while transport also came to a halt.
