Santo Domingo.- The United States and the Dominican Republic will discuss a new extradition treaty from a draft proposed by Washington, which lifts all limits on the handover of a person to the judicial authorities in both countries.
Justice Ministry Extradition Dept. director Gisela Cueto said, U.S. and Dominican commissions will meet to discuss the proposal in a meeting at the Foreign Ministry in August. "We’re going to negotiate a new bilateral instrument. We’re not going to renegotiate the old one."
She called Washington’s a proposal "quite good."
"I think it’s a quite important step forward in our relationship with the United States, because we’ve had some unpleasant experiences on that in the past," Cueto said.
She said an eventual extradition treaty will cover technological crimes, child support, intellectual property, or any conduct criminalized in both countries, "in accordance with the prison terms and the penalty of incarceration required."
