Ministry of Tourism prioritizes plastic-free sustainability in Pedernales

Pedernales, DR.- Making Pedernales a truly sustainable tourist destination is a top priority for the Ministry of Tourism (Mitur), emphasized Carlos Peguero, Vice Minister for International Cooperation. Speaking at the 8th edition of the Sustainable & Social Tourism Summit, Peguero outlined the sustainability strategy for Pedernales, which includes specific programs such as eliminating plastic.

Peguero highlighted the importance of attracting environmentally committed investors to Pedernales. He detailed the process, supported by Caribe Circular, to develop policies aimed at minimizing plastic use in the region, which is expected to significantly impact the economy of the Deep South.

He also praised the Pro-Pedernales Trust for creating guidelines for companies, tourists, and local residents to promote awareness about plastics and the circular economy.

The Sustainable & Social Tourism Summit, the leading event for sustainable and social tourism in Latin America, focused this year on “Towards Plastic-Free Tourism.” The discussion emphasized collaboration between the private sector and public policies to address plastic use in tourism. The implementation of the Less Plastic Guide and sustainable strategies in destinations like Huatulco and Pedernales serve as inspiring examples for a more sustainable future.
