Meeting on Constitutional Reform proposal at National Palace

Santo Domingo.- On Tuesday, over fifty lawyers convened at the National Palace to discuss the constitutional reform proposal presented by President Luis Abinader the day before.

The meeting was chaired by Antoliano Peralta Romero, the legal advisor to the Executive Branch, who outlined the proposed constitutional amendments. The purpose of the gathering was to gather feedback and suggestions to strengthen the proposal.

Legal professionals voiced their opinions and raised questions about the elements of the presidential initiative. Key considerations included a proposal to prevent future constitutional modifications aimed at altering the current presidential reelection model, which allows for two consecutive terms and no more.

Another significant topic was the proposal that the Attorney General of the Republic be selected by the National Council of the Judiciary, which received extensive commentary. President Abinader’s proposal to reduce the number of deputies from 190 to 137 also garnered attention, with many expressing concerns about the immovability of the Attorney General for the entire term of government.

The constitutional reform proposal, set to be presented to the National Congress on August 16, includes four key points: ensuring stability in presidential election rules, securing the independence of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, unifying elections, and reducing the number of representatives in the Chamber of Deputies.
