Dominican filmmakers secures three awards at Locarno Film Festival

Locarno, Switzerland.- Dominican cinema achieved notable success at the 77th Locarno International Film Festival, with 15 filmmakers winning three awards. The animated film Olivia & Las Nubes received a special mention in the Concorso Cineasti del Presente section, while A Funeral for Lola won the Open Doors – OIF – ACP – EU Award, providing 18 months of consultancy support. Joel Alfonso Vargas earned Best Director in the Pardi di Domani section for Que te vaya bonito, Rico.

Additionally, Dominican films Bachata de Biónico and Sirena were well-received in the Open Doors Screenings section. This marks the third year of collaboration between the Directorate General of Cinema (DGCine) and the Locarno Festival, promoting Dominican talent internationally.
