Dominican government takes over traffic light network after three-day disruption in National District

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Government, through the National Institute of Transit and Land Transport (INTRANT), has taken control of the traffic light network in the National District following a failure that caused three days of significant traffic congestion. The issue arose after the company Transcore Latam SRL, responsible for the modernization and management of the traffic system, replaced devices without proper authorization, violating agreements with the Dominican State.

INTRANT’s director, Milton Morrison, reported that the problem began on August 27 when INTRANT technicians discovered unauthorized replacements by TransCore. When the incident was reported to the company Transcore, it decided to cease all its services to INTRANT at 10:44 p.m. on August 27, notifying this decision through an internal chat between its technicians and officials of the institute.

The disruption initially impacted 29 critical intersections, eventually spreading to 55 throughout the district. In response, INTRANT assembled an emergency technical team on August 29, taking control of six fiber optic communication nodes previously managed exclusively by TransCore. Although the system has been restored, technical challenges remain, but INTRANT’s swift intervention prevented a more severe breakdown.
