National Archives receives donation from Pedro Henríquez Ureña’s library

Santo Domingo.- The National Archives (AGN) recently received a significant donation of 53 titles from the personal library of renowned Dominican humanist Pedro Henríquez Ureña. The donation was made by the Dominican Republic’s Ambassador to Mexico, María Isabel Castillo Báez, on behalf of Pablo González Casanova Henríquez, the grandson of Henríquez Ureña, who resides in Cuernavaca, Mexico.

During a ceremony at the AGN headquarters, Ambassador Castillo Báez emphasized the importance of this donation, which includes unique copies, some with special dedications, such as one from former President Juan Bosch, and an unpublished manuscript of poetry by Nicolás Ureña de Mendoza, Henríquez Ureña’s grandfather. She expressed her privilege in contributing to the preservation of Dominican documentary heritage and cultural memory.

This donation is part of an ongoing effort to honor the legacy of Pedro Henríquez Ureña, known as the “Socrates of the Caribbean,” and is supported by the reactivation of the chair named after him at the Dominican Embassy in Mexico. The event concluded with the presentation of a cooperation agreement between the Dominican Republic and Mexico, symbolizing the strong diplomatic ties between the two nations.
