World leaders ‘pressure’ Haiti-Dominican Republic conundrum

Santo Domingo.- The conundrum that the myriad issues posed by Dominican Republic and Haiti ties, often called “a matrimony without divorce,” has attracted three world leaders in less than one month, all of whom called for a “humane solution” to the hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants and to the situation faced by as many offspring of Haitians.

U.S. vice president Joseph Biden and UN secretary general Ban ki-Moon were in the country recently, whereas European Union Council president Herman Van Rompuy arrived Monday, to take part in the dialogue held in Punta Cana (east) between the Hispaniola neighbors.

"We should all agree that it’s a shared concern that requires a humane solution," said Rompuy in reference to the issue of persons born in Dominican Republic, from undocumented aliens.

Although the European leader stressed a humane solution on the issue of Haitians born in Dominican Republic of illegal parents, he acknowledged the country’s sovereignty. "I don’t want to get into a discussion over a question that goes to the heart of national sovereignty," he said.

He praised Congress for approving the special law governing the status of people of foreign origin born in the country, calling it an important step to resolve “a difficult and delicate matter.”

For newspaper El Nacional however, Van Rompuy, Biden, and Ban, “all came with the clear task of exerting pressure on the country regarding to the Haitian issue.”
