Seven dead in tragic accident in Azua

Azua – Mary Peña, 44 years old, died after several days in the intensive care unit of the Alejandro Cabral hospital in San Juan de la Maguana, where she was admitted as a result of a traffic accident that occurred early last Sunday morning in the community of Bastidas, Azua province.
Her death brings the total number of fatalities in this tragic incident to seven.

The doctor in charge of the case reported that only two patients remain hospitalized: Uberlly de los Santos, who is in stable condition, and an 18-year-old girl transferred to the standard ward. In contrast, the doctors evaluate the possibility of surgical intervention.

The doctor also highlighted that the hospital’s blood bank has had an adequate supply to attend to the injured.

Details of the accident

The accident occurred when Angel Encarnacion, driver of a red Daihatsu truck, going way too fast while not paying proper attention, ran over a group of people who were standing in front of a liquor store.

After the incident, Encarnación fled but later turned himself in to the authorities.

The court imposed on him as a coercive measure an economic guarantee of one million pesos, in addition to the periodic presentation for six months and an impediment to leaving the country.

Encarnacion Bautista faces charges of reckless driving, speeding, and involuntarily causing grievous bodily harm.

Once again, thoughtless, reckless, inconsiderate speeding has claimed too many lives that should never have been lost to such abhorrent stupidity.
