The Hostos Project: what we know about the submarine cable connecting DR and Puerto Rico’s power systems

The Hostos Project: what we know about the submarine cable connecting DR and Puerto Rico’s power systems

Santo Domingo – Caribbean Transmission, promoter of the Hostos Project, has welcomed President Luis Abinader’s recent endorsement of the electrical interconnection between the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.

But what is the Hostos Project, and how will it benefit the Dominican Republic?

The Hostos Project involves installing a submarine cable to connect the electrical systems of the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. This proposal, as reported, will allow more efficient use of renewable energies, strengthen the capacity to respond to natural disasters, and improve the stability of the electrical grids of both nations.

For his part, President Luis Abinader highlighted that the vision for 2027 includes creating an energy surplus that guarantees energy security for the Dominican population and allows for the export of electricity to Puerto Rico, reinforcing the potential for collaboration between the islands.

Abinader also highlighted the goal of reaching 30% renewable generation by 2030, which aligns with the pillars of efficiency, stability, and sustainability promoted by the Hostos Project. “With this interconnection, both nations will benefit from a more resilient grid, reducing the frequency of blackouts and optimizing the use of renewable energy,” read a press release.

Abinader was speaking during his participation in the Latin America and Caribbean Infrastructure Investment Conference of the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF) and Financial Times, held on September 4.

“Caribbean Transmission reaffirms its commitment to this project, which marks a new chapter in the region’s energy history, providing a more reliable and stable electricity supply, while moving towards a greener and more efficient energy future,” he stressed in the document.
