Justice Ministry to destroy 2,000 guns; slams ‘weapons culture’

Santo Domingo.- The Justice Ministry on Monday will destroy with a steamroller 2,000 guns seized in operations across the country, and will then build a "monument of peace" with the remnants.

Justice minister Francisco Domínguez said the measure marks the start of a policy to destroy all weapons seized from citizens who don’t have license to bear them, as well as those which have been modified.

He said he expects today’s measure will start a discussion on the bearing of arms in the Dominican Republic, slamming the country’s weapons culture as “a disaster."
