Santo Domingo.- Former Dominican President Leonel Fernández has increased his criticism of the immigration policies under President Luis Abinader, denouncing inconsistencies in border management and visa issuance to Haitian citizens. Using the X platform (formerly Twitter), Fernández argued that these issues threaten national sovereignty, citing official data that shows a dramatic reduction in border crossings compared to previous years.
According to the General Directorate of Migration, only 9,064 people entered the Dominican Republic through the border in 2024, compared to previous records of 265,000 to over 330,000. Fernández questioned the credibility of these numbers, suggesting potential irregularities in immigration control and asking, “How can the authorities explain it?”
He also highlighted concerns raised by Listín Diario about a black market in Haiti for Dominican visas, urging the government to investigate. As public scrutiny grows, the opposition leader’s allegations have left many awaiting an official response from the Abinader administration.
