Haitian leader says measures against illegals “a blessing” to bad practices

Santiago – Haitian leader Wendy Osirus, ambassador of goodwill and hope for Haiti in Santiago, expressed his concern about President Luis Abinader’s new migratory dispositions to repatriate 10,000 undocumented immigrants a week, assuring that this is giving “the blessing” to the destructive practices of the migration agents.

“I’m not worried about the trucks, I’m not worried about sending irregular Haitians to Haiti, I’m worried about the practices of the agents now that they have the blessing of the central state,” Osirus said.

“Migrants are more scared than ever; many do not go out to work for fear of reprisals,” he said, noting that arrests have intensified in recent months.

“The situation is alarming and now with this discourse, agents feel more entitled to violate the rights of the undocumented,” he added.

The president of the Movement for Rights, Peace, and Global Justice (MONDHA) established that the Dominican Republic is a state of law, and its laws do not discriminate, so it cannot be considered a violation of human rights.

He urged the government to reconsider its approach, “enlightened by the provisions of the Constitution of the country, the 1999 protocol of the Dominican Republic and Haiti on repatriations, the Migration Law 285-04, and the thousands of Haitians who enrolled in the National Regularization Plan , of which 98% are workers who contribute to the Dominican economy.”

“And it is fine, they have the right to deport all migrants, all those who are irregular, undocumented, but the Government must always think of due process,” he said.
