Protests erupt over Tax Reform in the Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo.- The recent tax reform proposal from President Luis Abinader’s administration has sparked widespread protests across the Dominican Republic. Citizens and various social groups are expressing their discontent with the Fiscal Modernization Bill through organized actions, including a cacerolazo—where people bang pans in protest. On Sunday night, neighborhoods like Bella Vista, Evaristo Morales, and Naco in the National District experienced these protests.

The protest, initiated on social media and other platforms, urged citizens to join in by making noise at 8 p.m. to voice their opposition to the bill. The government’s Fiscal Modernization Bill aims to boost state tax revenues, which are intended to fund public investment in transportation, health, security, and support for vulnerable populations. However, the reform has faced criticism from those concerned about its potential impacts.
