Santo Domingo.- Drivers of concho cars, motoconchistas, and pedestrians using Isabel Aguiar Avenue and 27 de Febrero reported significant declines in earnings due to recent traffic restrictions at the intersection. Jorge Luis Andújar, a concho driver, noted losses between RD$150 and RD$400 in fuel, while those working full shifts may lose up to RD$900 when considering time and fuel expenses. Manuel Guerrero, who drives along the 27 de Febrero extension, stated that income for his group of 67 drivers has plummeted by approximately 70%.

Despite the typical expectation that motorcycle taxi drivers would benefit from traffic congestion, they are now facing fewer passengers and reduced profits. Ordinary citizens have also been affected, needing to leave home up to two hours earlier to reach work on time.

To ease congestion, alternative routes have been recommended: northbound travelers should use Guarocuya, L, I, and Caonabo Streets, while southbound travelers are advised to take the extension of Rómulo Betancourt Avenue, Jorge Vilalta Street, and H Street. The area will be properly signposted, and Digesett agents will assist.

The traffic disruptions are a result of a joint initiative by the Ministry of Public Works (MOPC) and the Santo Domingo Water and Sewer Corporation (CAASD) to address a drinking water service interruption at the intersection of the two avenues. CAASD director Fellito Suberví revealed that only 28% of the corporation’s 450,000 customers currently pay for water services, highlighting ongoing challenges in the area.
