La Vega.- The Council of Aldermen in La Vega has reversed the resolution that accepted the resignation of Vice Mayor Amparo Custodio. The decision, made with 11 votes in favor out of 17 councilors present, allows Custodio to resume her position, which she held alongside former Mayor Kelvin Cruz after their victory in the last municipal elections with over 77% of the vote.
The move comes after numerous neighborhood associations, community organizations, and local leaders requested her return to restore the town hall’s normal operations. Custodio, in a communication, expressed her readiness to resume the role, noting that many figures in La Vega had encouraged her to return for the sake of institutional peace and stability.
While current interim Mayor Joel Martínez is recognized for his capabilities, community leaders believe his temporary status limits his ability to push forward critical projects. Custodio, a respected biology teacher and prominent leader of the Frente Amplio party, has previously been elected as a councilor and vice mayor three times, demonstrating her deep connection and commitment to the community.
