New York.- The New York State Assembly honored Sergia Galván, a distinguished Dominican activist, for her lifelong dedication to human rights and gender equality. Galván, known both in the Dominican Republic and internationally, has devoted her career to advocating for women’s rights and social justice. The tribute, presented during the SOMOS 2024 Dominican Reception, was led by Assemblywoman Karines Reyes, with support from Assemblywoman Amanda Septimo and other community leaders.
The recognition celebrated Galván’s work as an educator in Women’s Studies and her advocacy for sexual and reproductive rights. She has held key roles, including Director of Public Policies at the Ministry of Women and Executive Director of the Women and Health Collective, where she championed gender equality policies. Notably, she was the first Dominican expert to serve on the Follow-up Mechanism of the Belém do Pará Convention, furthering her commitment to women’s rights on a regional scale.
In addition to her work in gender equality, Galván is a passionate anti-racism advocate, founding the Afro-Latin American, Afro-Caribbean, and Diaspora Women’s Network. She also serves on the Board of the Latin American and Caribbean Women’s Health Network. The tribute underscores her impactful activism, which has left a lasting influence on the fight for justice and equality.
