Santo Domingo.- Starting in 2025, the Dominican Republic and Spain’s International Cooperation will focus on projects that enhance the resilience of coastal municipalities and safeguard the natural resources of key tourist areas. This initiative was announced in a joint statement by Max Puig, Executive Vice President of the National Council for Climate Change and Clean Development Mechanism (CNCCMDL), and Antón Leis, Director of the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), following a meeting to discuss climate collaboration.
The goal is to ensure sustainable tourism development while preserving the Dominican Republic’s value as a leading tourist destination. Puig also noted that, while specific actions are still under discussion, the priority will be on national adaptation strategies that protect the economy, particularly the tourism sector.
Additionally, the climate financing may target coastal sanitation efforts to reduce solid waste dumping on Dominican beaches. The discussions were held in the context of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan.
