New York.- Today, November 25, the United Nations General Assembly is hosting a high-level meeting in New York to mark the 25th anniversary of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, dedicated to the memory of the Mirabal sisters, victims of Rafael Leónidas Trujillo’s dictatorship. The event will run in two sessions, with Dominican Republic’s Minister of Women, Mayra Jiménez, representing her country.
The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution urging member states, international organizations, and civil society to commemorate this milestone. The initiative aims to promote gender equality, prevent violence against women and girls, and foster a culture of peace. The resolution, approved in June, was introduced by the Dominican Republic’s Permanent Mission to the UN.
The event highlights global efforts to honor the sisters’ legacy and raise awareness about combating gender-based violence, inviting participation from various sectors, including academia and the private sector.
