Environment and Navy partner to protect Baní Dunes

Santo Domingo.- The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources has intensified efforts to protect the Las Calderas Dunes Natural Monument in Peravia province, following environmental damage caused by illegal logging and burning. Measures include an agreement with the Dominican Navy to ensure permanent surveillance, supported by four motorcycles for patrols, and the construction of three watchtowers, two surveillance booths, and a visitor center to enhance monitoring and conservation.

The Ministry has also dismissed the park administrator and referred the alleged offender to the Environmental Prosecutor’s Office. A technical study will assess whether the damaged area requires assisted regeneration or can recover naturally. These steps aim to prevent future environmental crimes and preserve the site’s integrity.

Environment Minister Paíno Henríquez emphasized the importance of discipline and cooperation, while Vice Admiral Agustín Morillo pledged the Navy’s commitment to environmental protection. The Ministry calls on citizens to respect protected areas and support conservation efforts to safeguard national heritage.
