Bolívar Valera admits lack of consultation on social media regulation proposal

Santo Domingo.- Bolívar Valera, a deputy from the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), admitted he did not consult key figures before presenting a resolution on the self-regulation of social networks. He clarified that the proposal does not intend to limit freedom of expression or harm users but aims to promote responsible digital practices.

Valera emphasized the potential of voluntary measures, pointing to examples where platforms and content creators have successfully adopted self-regulation to foster safer online spaces. He stressed that such initiatives demonstrate how digital responsibility can be achieved without compromising fundamental rights.

To advance the discussion, Valera announced the formation of The People’s Commission, a collaborative group including content creators, experts, and civil society representatives. This initiative aims to develop transparent and inclusive proposals, ensuring respect for rights while encouraging a responsible digital environment. He invited stakeholders to engage in dialogue to create solutions that benefit society as a whole.
