Leonel Fernandez: Constitution bans reelection

Santo Domingo.- During the presentation Sunday of the democratic platform for his presidential bid, former president Leonel Fernandez said that the Dominican Constitution clearly bans reelection.

Fernandez said that even though "the winds are blowing" in his favor, he has not yet decided if he enters the presidential race for 2016 elections.

The former head of state reviewed the democratic process emerged from the fall of dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo and under professor Juan Bosch’s administration, to emphasize that "the PLD’s next step is to turn the current electoral democracy into citizen democracy."

Leonel Fernandez, who was greeted by more than three thousand people in the San Souci Convention Center, said the consolidation of democracy is based on the Magna Carta of 2010, which follows the guidelines contained in the Constitution of 1963.
