Dengue fever and other indicators down in the country

Dr. Victor Atallah

Santo Domingo – The Ministry of Health reiterated yesterday that the Dominican Republic continues to control Dengue despite the increases in cases registered in other countries in the region, which has been valued by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) as a leader in managing the disease.

The Minister of Health, Víctor Atallah, who other countries have consulted on the strategies implemented, stressed that these measures, added to effective communication and community participation, have been key to controlling the spread of Dengue.

According to the Epidemiological Bulletin corresponding to Epidemiological Week number 48, 1,271 cases have been reported in the country, with an incidence of 12.90. This represents a reduction of 63.58% compared to the same week in 2023 when 3,490 cases were reported. This control of the disease stands out amid a growing increase in countries in the region.

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) recently warned of increased dengue cases in the Americas. More than 12.6 million cases were reported this year, almost three times the number reported in 2023. In this context, PAHO Director Dr. Jarbas Barbosa has urged countries to develop more effective strategies to prevent and control outbreaks. In the Dominican Republic, however, various preventive actions, including the campaign “Let’s Beat Dengue!” have helped maintain controlled levels.
