Santo Domingo.- On Migrant Day, Adelis Olivares, overseas deputy and president of the Foundation for the Development of Dominicans Abroad (FUNDODEX), led a floral tribute at the Plazoleta al Migrante, located at the intersection of 27 de Febrero Avenue and Ortega y Gasset. The event commemorated the crucial role of migrants in both their countries of origin and host nations.
In his speech, Olivares highlighted the significance of December 18 as Migrant Day, established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2000. He emphasized the vital contributions of the Dominican diaspora, representing over 24% of the nation’s population, and recognized the increasing role of women in migration. Olivares also pointed out the growing humanitarian crises worldwide, particularly in regions like Sudan, Ukraine, and Haiti, where millions are affected by displacement and hunger.
Olivares reaffirmed his commitment to supporting Dominicans abroad and promoting international cooperation on migration issues. He called for the protection of migrants’ dignity and security, stressing their importance in global development and the need for a better future for all. The ceremony was attended by key figures, including other overseas deputies and prominent personalities.
