Dominican Republic settles decades-old debt with WIPO

Santo Domingo.- The Ministry of Industry, Commerce, and MSMEs (MICM) announced the settlement of a debt with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) that had been outstanding since 1975. This payment, executed by the MICM, resolves nearly 50 years of obligations, marking a significant milestone for the Dominican Republic as a committed member of the global intellectual property community.

Minister Víctor -Ito- Bisonó emphasized the strategic importance of this achievement, noting that it enhances the country’s reputation as a reliable international partner. Additionally, it strengthens the country’s position to avoid inclusion on the U.S. Trade Representative’s Special 301 Report Watch List, which evaluates intellectual property practices and can impose trade barriers.

By fulfilling its obligations, the Dominican Republic reinforces its commitment to fostering a competitive business environment.
