Santo Domingo.- Dominican President Luis Abinader expressed his sorrow over the death of former US President Jimmy Carter, describing him as “a great human being and tireless fighter for democracy and human rights.” Abinader highlighted Carter’s achievements, including his Nobel Peace Prize in 2002, and extended prayers for his family through a post on social media platform X.
Former Dominican President Leonel Fernández also paid tribute, recalling Carter’s visits to the Dominican Republic in 2009 and 2011 to support social projects. Fernández, who awarded Carter the Order of Merit of Duarte, Sánchez, and Mella in 2011, praised his enduring contributions to democracy and human rights. “Jimmy Carter’s legacy will live on as an inspiration for future generations,” Fernández stated, offering condolences to Carter’s family and the American people.
Carter, the 39th US president, passed away at age 100 at his home in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by family. A Nobel Peace Prize laureate, he was recognized for his global humanitarian efforts. Public ceremonies will be held in Atlanta and Washington, D.C., followed by a private burial in Georgia, according to the Carter Center.
