Santo Domingo.- The Banco Popular Dominicano announced that the Casa del Cordón Taíno Cultural Center has attracted 8,504 visitors since its opening on November 21, 2024. Among these, 1,105 visitors (13%) were international tourists, primarily from the United States, Colombia, and Spain. This demonstrates growing international interest in the island’s pre-Hispanic culture, bolstering the Dominican Republic’s global cultural appeal.
The center’s store, which promotes Dominican craftsmanship, has achieved over RD$1.6 million in sales, showcasing local artisans and supporting the country’s orange economy. Additionally, its digital presence has flourished, with nearly 35,000 website visits and over 5,900 Instagram followers since its launch.
Located in the Colonial City, the center features a permanent exhibition of over 350 pre-Hispanic artifacts loaned by the García Arévalo Foundation, documenting the island’s history from archaic populations to the Taíno culture. It also offers a temporary exhibition on Dominican visual arts, curated by historian María Elena Ditrén, alongside cultural events such as conferences, workshops, and Christmas carols. Housed in a historic colonial building from 1503, the center is free to the public until January 31, providing a unique opportunity to explore the Dominican Republic’s rich heritage.
