Dominican left-wing groups protest Edmundo González’s visit

Santo Domingo.- Left-wing organizations in the Dominican Republic staged a demonstration at Plaza Bolívar on Thursday to oppose the visit of Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo González Urrutia. Declaring him a “persona non grata,” protesters accused González Urrutia of a criminal past and alleged attempts to undermine Venezuelan democracy.

Narciso Isa Conde, a prominent activist, criticized the visit, stating: “From Plaza Bolívar, founded by Hugo Chávez Frías, we declare Edmundo González Urrutia persona non grata for his criminal record and his attempts to steal the presidency.”

Joint Statement from Protesters

The protest groups issued a detailed statement condemning Dominican President Luis Abinader for supporting González Urrutia. They accused the president of interfering in Venezuela’s internal affairs and aligning with imperialist forces to destabilize the Bolivarian Republic.

The statement highlighted González Urrutia’s alleged involvement in crimes, including conspiracy, incitement to violence, and forgery, for which he is reportedly wanted by Venezuelan authorities. It also criticized Abinader’s plan to host González Urrutia at the National Palace, labeling it a media stunt aimed at undermining Nicolás Maduro’s government.

Protesters called on Dominicans to reject the presence of González Urrutia and denounced the use of the country’s resources to support what they described as “a fictitious state.” They urged adherence to international law, respect for Venezuela’s sovereignty, and recognition of Maduro as Venezuela’s legitimate president.

The protest was organized by several left-wing groups, including the Caamañista Movement, the Broad Front, and the Dominican Popular Movement, among others. The organizations reaffirmed their solidarity with the Venezuelan people and vowed to continue resisting external interference in the region.
