Santo Domingo.- President Luis Abinader issued Decree 8-25, repealing Article 26 of Decree 246-16, which had appointed Miguel Mejía as Minister without Portfolio for Regional Integration Policies. This decision follows Mejía’s harsh critique of Abinader’s foreign policy, labeling it a “disaster” aligned with foreign powers rather than national interests.
Mejía, leader of the United Left Movement (MIU), condemned the government’s stance on Venezuela and other international issues, accusing the president of prioritizing external agendas. He also criticized Abinader’s recent meeting with Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo González, calling it unnecessary and reflective of misplaced priorities.
The repeal effectively ends Mejía’s tenure, during which he worked to strengthen regional ties between the Dominican Republic and Latin America. Mejía reaffirmed his advocacy for a foreign policy that prioritizes national sovereignty over foreign influence, emphasizing the need for decisions that benefit the Dominican Republic.
