Israeli Embassy in the Dominican Republic honors International Day of Remembrance for Holocaust Victims

Santo Domingo.- The Embassy of Israel in the Dominican Republic, in partnership with the Espacio Anna Frank Foundation, hosted a screening of the film “One Life” to commemorate the International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Holocaust. This observance, established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2005, is held annually on January 27, marking the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp in 1945. Notably, 2025 will mark the 80th anniversary of this historic event.

Israel’s Ambassador to the Dominican Republic, Raslan Abu Rukun, delivered poignant remarks honoring the six million Jews who perished during the Holocaust and acknowledging the suffering endured by many under the Nazi regime. He emphasized the importance of this day, stating, “This day is not only about remembering the past, but also about shaping the future. We must learn from history, promote tolerance, and uphold the values of justice, equity, and human dignity. These principles are the foundation of peace and coexistence in our world.”

Karen Koenig, representing the Espacio Anna Frank Foundation, announced the foundation’s first edition of In Memoriam 2025, aimed at raising awareness of the dangers of discrimination, hatred, and racism. “This year, we want to honor those who, through their courage, brought light in a time of darkness. The Righteous Among the Nations teach us that every person can make a difference,” Koenig stated.

The film “One Life,” which tells the true story of Nicholas Winton—a British stockbroker who helped rescue over 600 children from Czechoslovakia before World War II—will have free screenings at Caribbean Cinemas in Sambil on January 30 and 31 at 7:00 p.m., and February 1 and 2 at 5:00 p.m.
