ONPECO urges ban on Red Dye 3 following FDA decision

Santo Domingo.- After the U.S. FDA banned the use of Red Dye 3 in food, beverages, and medications in January 2025 due to its carcinogenic effects in lab studies, the National Observatory for Consumer Protection (ONPECO) is calling on the Ministry of Public Health (MISPAS) to implement similar regulations in the Dominican Republic. The dye is already prohibited in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.
The FDA mandates a gradual phase-out, requiring food reformulation by January 2027 and compliance for oral medications by January 2028, including imports. Red Dye 3, also known as E-127 or erythrosine, is a synthetic dye used in candies, ice cream, flavored milk, liqueurs, and some medications. Studies suggest that excessive consumption of artificial colorants, including Red Dye 3, may contribute to allergic reactions and behavioral disorders such as ADHD.
ONPECO argues that banning Red Dye 3 is essential for public health and urges stronger regulatory oversight. It also advises consumers to check labels and avoid products containing the dye as a precautionary measure.
