Santo Domingo.- Security ministers and high-ranking officials from six Central American countries and the Dominican Republic will formalize a new regional initiative to combat the illegal trafficking of weapons, ammunition, and explosives on February 12 at the Organization of American States (OAS) headquarters in Washington, D.C.

The agreement, known as the “Roadmap to Prevent Illicit Trafficking and Proliferation of Weapons, Ammunition, and Explosives,” aims to enhance intergovernmental coordination and strengthen law enforcement capabilities to address one of the region’s major security threats. Spearheaded by the OAS and the United Nations Regional Centre for Peace, Disarmament, and Development (UNLIREC), with financial backing from the European Union, the initiative also supports violence prevention, arms control, and improved investigative and prosecution strategies.

The event will feature key figures, including OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro, UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Izumi Nakamitsu, and security officials from Guatemala, Panama, the Dominican Republic, Honduras, El Salvador, Costa Rica, and Belize. Key measures in the agreement include enhanced border controls, specialized anti-trafficking units, and tracking systems to curb the proliferation of illegal arms in the region.
