Santo Domingo.- Traffic-accident deaths fell 50% during the yearend holidays compared with 2014, the Emergency Operations Center (COE) said Thursday, with seven fatalities nationwide. 15 people died during the same period in 2014.
COE director Juan Manuel Mendez said 193 traffic accidents were occurred from 2pm December 30, to 6am Thursday morning, Jan.1, of which 115 involved motorcycles.
He said 13 people were hospitalized with alcoholic overdose, including two children under 11, and seven sustained food poisoning.
Mendez attributed the fewer deaths to the protection from 2,500 first responders at aid stations set up across the country.
The official also lauded the work by the Metropolitan Transit Authority (Amet) and the Public Works Military and Police Committee, which together assisted 1,195 people on the roads across the country.
