Zoe Saldaña wins SAG Award, strengthens Oscar chances

Los Angeles, (EFE).- Dominican actress Zoe Saldaña continues her awards season dominance, winning the SAG Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Emilia Pérez. The Screen Actors Guild Awards, which exclusively recognize acting achievements, honored Saldaña alongside 12 other winners in film and television. This latest accolade adds to her Golden Globe, Critics Choice, and BAFTA wins, solidifying her as a top Oscar contender.

In her acceptance speech, Saldaña emphasized the importance of inclusion, expressing pride in being part of an industry that embraces diversity. She triumphed over Monica Barbaro, Jamie Lee Curtis, Danielle Deadwyler, and Ariana Grande in a competitive category.

Emilia Pérez, directed by Jacques Audiard, is a crime musical about a drug lord (Karla Sofía Gascón) who undergoes gender transition with the help of a lawyer (Saldaña). Despite its record-breaking nominations, the film has sparked debate over its portrayal of Mexican culture and past controversial remarks by its lead actress. However, Saldaña’s stellar performance keeps her in the spotlight, making history as a potential first Dominican-born Oscar winner.
