Santiago de los Caballeros.- With the ringing of the bell, Vice President Raquel Peña inaugurated the 2025 International Boxing Independence Cup, reaffirming the Dominican Republic as a key host for international sporting events.
Now in its 44th edition, the tournament brings together boxers from Australia, Barbados, Canada, the United States, Panama, and the Dominican Republic. Peña, to whom this year’s cup is dedicated, emphasized the nation’s progress in sports, stating, “Dominican sport is at its best.”
Minister of Sports Kelvin Cruz highlighted the event’s historical significance, while Dominican Boxing Federation President Rubén García praised its evolution. Frank Rodríguez, Chancellor of UTESA and head of the organizing committee, underscored the tournament’s role in fostering competition and excellence.
The opening ceremony, held at UTESA’s amphitheater, was attended by key government and sports officials, including provincial governor Rosa Santos, Senator Daniel Rivera, and Santiago’s mayor Ulises Rodríguez.
