Santo Domingo.- Threelawmakers on Tuesday asked the Chamber of Deputies to condemn the kidnapping ofthe Dominican Consulate’s staff in the Haiti town of Anse-a-Pitre last week.
Deputies VinicioCastillo, Víctor Gómez and LuisínJiménez submitted the initiative and also asked the Foreign Ministry to issue adiplomatic protest to Haiti’s Government, for the alleged kidnapping of five Dominicanemployees during several hours.
"We ask the ForeignMinistry to demand that the authorities of Haiti and MINUSTAH (UN HaitiStabilization Mission), which has occupied the country militarily, guaranteethe security of all of Dominican Republic’s diplomatic and consular staff inHaiti, so that events such as those that occurred won’t be repeated," Castilloduring a press conference in the Chamber of Deputies.
Poaching
Pedernales (southwest)senator Dionis Sanchez said the kidnapping occurred after two Haitian fishermenwere caught poaching in national waters.
He suggested markingthe maritime boundary between the two nations, either with buoys or alighthouse, to keep Haitians from fishing within national waters and viceversa.
Sanchez also complainedthat in the Pedernales towns of Mencia and Las Mercedes, 70% of their residentsare undocumented Haitians.
