Madrid, (EFE).- The Dominican Republic, along with Cuba, Bolivia, and Ecuador, remains among the Latin American countries that still require a Schengen visa for travel to Europe. Despite ongoing interest, the European Commission has stated that there are no immediate plans to revise the list of visa-exempt countries.
While the final decision lies with the European Commission, Spain has expressed support for several nations, including the Dominican Republic, in their efforts to obtain visa-free status. As part of this process, the Dominican government is implementing biometric passports, a key step toward future exemption discussions.
Ecuador and Bolivia have also been actively seeking Schengen visa exemptions, citing labor demand in Spain and strong economic ties. However, despite diplomatic efforts, they remain outside the visa-free agreement that other Latin American nations have secured. Currently, around 60 countries benefit from Schengen visa exemption, covering most of Latin America except for the four nations still awaiting approval.
